In what was to be another huge day we decended, family and all, on a very amped up Tauranga crowd to kick off the school holidays in style. Booked months on advance, who would have thought the excitement could have lasted that long, let alone actually live up to the hype!
What better way to celebrate your birthday than to have all your riding buddies and their families out to your place for a massive day of coaching. Of course the pressure was on me to perform but that is normal and this time I had Scott Barr-Smith to help, so what could possibly go wrong? Even the pesky showers of rain that arrived were not enough to dampen the spirit.
The property dubbed Wiki Wonderland was sectioned into three parts, the easiest of which got plenty of use right from the get go. There were three hour long sessions to hammer through before lunch with the youngest ones starting us off which went well but it was the advanced group up next who were most vocal about the improvements they could feel. Danika and her crew were third and really smashed it with a real ability to transform my words into action before the massive roast pork lunch. It really doesn’t get much better than a big feed to break up a good days coaching.
The timing for our heaviest downpour came right on time while we were scoffing up large, the only problem of course being the younger riders having to brave the wet first. By that time my helper Scotty was needing to head off so I was by myself but not to worry. Soon I had a mini log set up around a small loop that they could practice gripping with their knees on, plus the back of a berm to jump while still staying low to the bike and a straight to practice their wheelies. Even the most hesitant felt comfortable giving that a go and soon it was time for the adults.
After showing them the basics of jumping, next was survival on slippery hills before finishing with ruts around corners. Of course there was plenty of experience floating around by now but we were still able to help even the most extreme fathers out there. Full credit must go to Maria who organized much of this whole event and rode also, not letting the boys get into her head.
It wouldn’t be a party without presents so out came the Broxy giveaways with plenty for all thanks to Honda, DRD, Castrol and some shirts from us. This all came after a riding demonstration that I was able to put on which obviously succeeded in amping everyone up.
