Sometimes you have to twist things to make them fit, as was the case for our latest Pirinis camp. With the second half of my school holidays gone due an overseas bike test we thought it was the end of our two day camp. That all changed when we got enough pressure.
Our October Bootcamp began with a list of extremes. Extreme heat. A local lad aboard his CRF MX bike to a rider all the way from Northland aboard his CRF80 showing extreme speed. Then, while taking a tube out to fix a flat tyre I had something extremely weird experience. Like something out of a horror movie the first thing to pop out of that tyre was a kitchen knife, followed by a full sized tyre
Unfortunately we also had to go to the extreme when our Northland friend hit a jump harder than what his bike was capable of, hurting his side enough that I decided to call for outside help. There turned out to be nothing seriously wrong but I was glad to have played it safe anyway, and he got a free chopper ride. We were just gutted that it happened at all because he had been riding so well.
The More The Merrier
Our group tripled in size when more trail riders arrived to carry on in the spirit of our two day camp. While their lessons were a bit more casual there was also some important lessons to learn. Two days of riding interspersed with more lessons made sure that they were headed in the right direction and by the end even they were impressed with their new abilities.
With our Academy starting up over summer we hope to welcome plenty more trail riders who just intend on improving while the MX riders smash it out on their track. Be assured that we will do our utmost to accommodate everyone.
That first day of our camp had one other addition where we shared the park with Encounter Ministries. You can see why these things are so popular. Their pits is a unified affair, seemingly chaotic yet well organized. A highlight was listening in on the comprehensive briefing that they do before each days riding followed by a Bible reading and prayer from none other than multi time national road biking champ Andrew Stroud.
We hope to tie in closer with these guys and encourage any teenager who likes riding bikes to become a part of their ministry.
