NZ MX nats kick off for 2013

Temperatures soaring above 30 degrees, a fast and challenging track. This is where preparation comes to light and it was time to test where Kieran and I might be lacking.
My mistake came in qualifying, pushing my Botany Honda/ Castrol/ JT Racing CRF250R too hard before I had found my groove meant I wasn’t able to get up to pace, qualifying in 8th position with Kieran in 7th.

Caught in the Carnage
Unable to line up near the starting box, I was only able to manage starts around 6th or seventh place in all three races. That would have been ok except the riders all around me seemed over excited and I was no different, divine help being the only thing keeping me from a couple of big crashes.
I had to calm down, and it wasn’t until halfway through the first race that I found my rhythm, the coolest part being the only 250 to triple a wall jump halfway down the back straight. Unfortunately I was also taking a slow outside before the finish that was costing me over two seconds every lap which combined to give me 7th place with Kieran struggling after an even worse start to finish in 13th place.

Through the Rollers
Race two was more frustrating than the first as I saw a rider going down in front of me, took evasive action but still ended up with my front wheel firmly lodged between his rear wheel and back guard. I also struggled to get used to the conditions after a lunch time track watering made the main line slick and the insides too soft to form up. Right out of my rhythm I only managed twelfth place for the moto.
So, with the track getting good once again in time for the final race, I needed something a bit special.
Better way to Finish
For our final race at the Backflips MX track I basically rode solid with one main mistake that dropped me into fifth for a while before I could pass the Aussie winner of race two, Brock Winston to finish in fourth. Certainly not what I had intended to be my best result for the weekend, but left me in one piece. And Kieran finished the day with a 14th and two 7th positions, riding solid to finish the day 9th overall for a decent start to the season for the Broxy Racing Team.
