It would have to rank up there as one of the best evenings a farm kid can have on two wheels. With the savoury scent of cooking sausages wafting around the paddock, dozens of kids aboard their CRF or 65 machines took turns racing around the grippy track paved with dry, dead grass.
I joined them aboard the newest addition to the Honda fleet, an electric start CRF125. My charge through the pack was enough to motivate the quickest local lad to have the ride of his life, beating me in both cases. Excellent fun, but I had some giveaways to get rid of and so missed the last round.
From there the action got even better as a pair of excellent jumps became my stage, throwing out most of my best tricks before the big finale of the evening arrived. In a big red helicopter.
The kids excitement levels already at their limits, they were kept there as Santa and his elf arrived in a tummy turning display of aerial showmanship and dropping lollies before the pair were dropped down to earth for their presentations. Now there is no doubt that Bisset Honda know how to throw a party!
Gourmet Trail Ride
A few hours and a deep sleep later, I was back on the ground at Langlands Honda’s annual family trail ride. Again, I don’t know how these guys do it. Unbelievably, despite the attendance of 300 riders at the ride, the locals were still giving away sausages all day, topping the service off with excellent Paua fritters.
Both the adults and kids were challenged by the trails and then, as a bonus, I did my thing again at a set time. This time the jump was not so good so I attempted to make up for that with some guard scraping which didn’t all go to plan, much to the entertainment of the onlookers. It was a fun afternoon topped off by the chance to give some kids a ride on their dream bikes.
On many of my trips you will now find a full range of the R model CRF machines in my van, including the 125 four stroke that is proving to be a hit with kids and adults alike. Perhaps it would pay to put a little heat on your local Honda shop to get us along to their next event. We can’t guarantee a big red helicopter though!
